Southeast Alabama Highland Games Training Seminar

Cost? = $20 per person Highland Games is a United Kingdom celebration, it joins Scottish, Irish, and English heritage and bringing them together in a family friendly environment. Our event, The Southeast Alabama Highland Games are being held March 19th at the Houston County Farm Center. We'll have activities for the wee lads and lassies, Clan Genealogy tents if you'd like to trace your ancestry, vendors of all types, food, a car show, and of course...lots of guys running around in kilts throwing heavy things in the "games" part of the event. Who doesn't like that? The athletics are a show of strength and skill that consist of 7 different events. The stone's throw is much like the modern day shotput, but it actually uses a large stone. There are also 2 weights, 56# and 28# that are attached to a handle, that the competitor will throw as far as they can using a spin motion. Additionally, these weights will also be tossed over a bar, competing for height. Another event competing for height is the sheaf throw. A "sheaf" is a 16# stuffed burlap sack that's tossed over the cross bar using a pitch fork. Then there's the hammer throw, which is similar to the modern Olympic hammer throw, but our 22# hammer ball is attached to a handle that's solid instead of on a flexible chain. The last event is the real crowd pleaser. It's called the caber toss. A caber is similar to a telephone pole, and about that size. The athlete is required to throw it so it flips end over end. Wile these events are all strength related, they also require a bit of skill to achieve. Well, for vendors and visitors, you can click over to our website, www.wiregrasshighlandgames.com, to find all of the information and applications for the event. We welcome all types of businesses. The event is Saturday, March 19th so you have time to get it on your calendar!! S-As for the athletes out there who want to try their hands at all the "feats of strength", we're holding a clinic February 20 at Honeysuckle Middle School from 8am-2pm to help them learn all the ins and outs of tossing heavy things. Men AND WOMEN are welcome and no previous experience is required! Lunch will be provided, and the cost is $20.
