BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Some Alabama clergy are pleased that a
federal judge has blocked parts of the state's tough new
immigration law.

Until she reaches a final ruling, U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn has blocked a provision that makes it a crime to transport or harbor an illegal immigrant.

The Rev. Matt Lacey, one of 150 United Methodist pastors who signed a letter opposing the law, says Jesus Christ "welcomed the
stranger despite country of origin or status."

Lacey says Methodists were joined by Roman Catholic and Episcopal leaders in challenging the law.

Judge Blackburn refused to block provisions that require immigration status checks of public school students, and that allow police to hold suspected illegal immigrants without bond.

Gov. Robert Bentley says the state will appeal any parts of Blackburn's decision that prevent the law from being enforced.
