The highest-ranking openly gay official in President Obama's administration says “the climate for passing gay civil rights laws has never been better,” according to the Associated Press.

John Berry, however, reportedly, warned a group of gay-rights advocates Friday that if the opportunity is missed, it could be as long as a decade before another chance comes around. Berry is the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

His speech before Out & Equal Workplace Advocates conference in Orlando comes a day before Obama is set to address the nation's largest gay rights group.

Obama is said to be taking a cautious approach to following through with campaign promises to end a ban on gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military and pushing tough nondiscrimination policies.

This information was published by the Associated Press today and it raises some interesting questions. What do you think? Should rights be equalized? Should the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy be kept in effect? What about the questions of marriage and adoption?

This is for all the Gay's out there? Imagine your on the front line, bullets flying like mosquito's around a swamp. Do you want someone defending you who pissed in there pants, crying like a little pansy, or do you want a man on the front line defending you? A pancy who is uncontrollably crying or a heterosexual man who will fight? My opinion of people who are GAY is it is choice, and no you don't deserve special status! Obama, your legacy you leave behind when your Presidency is complete will be "You define Igorance and Stupidity!* Gates you are an embarrassment to all the Heterosexual men and women who have fought, and Admiral Mullen and General Pace, how you got to where you are now is obvious, salad tossers! Once the ban goes into effect, imagine the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, will be repealed, and the conservatives vote to go back to the times before Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Just like the good old days, bootem out by the 100's or maybe 1000's.

Only in southeast h.e.l.l. I mean Alabama would you people be able to get away with such bigoted rants. Are you saying that a gay person's life given for their country means nothing because they are gay? Do you really believe that there are no gays in the military AS WE TYPE? Please do not fool yourself. Christians consistantly make me sick to my stomach with their so called "love" of their fellow humans. Please, PLEASE don't love us so much. As a matter of fact, just ignore us and leave your judgment to your own kind.

Fighting in two wars, terrorist attacks on U.S. Military Post & recruiting stations, multiple combat tours.....yeah----lets add the burden of thrusting the gay folks on our military! Great thinking folks---just something else for our troops to suffer through!

I knew reading some of these comments would make me laugh. We should take a lesson from the animal kingdom, Don? Homosexuality is rampant in the animal kingdom, or did you mean take the example of animals abandoning or even killing the weaker among them to save the group? Animals do lots of things that are pretty unsavory, be careful where you look to for inspiration. Segregate gays in the miltary as if they were a separate sex? There's some real forward thinking. Violence within the ranks because of gays? They were saying the same thing about Blacks in the military 60-80 years ago. That it would be nothing but trouble, cause dissention among the troops. Seems to have worked itself out. I and this country have more important things to worry about than who my neighbor is sleeping with, like children living in poverty, or older children abandoned and living without family (incidently, gays seem to be the only group concerned about adopting the older kids). Have a great day!

So much for equal protection under the law... These people want "special" protection under the law.

Amen Jannell- Why should anyone get special treatment because of their sexual pref>? Stand up for civil unions instead.. don't try to force marriage into it... marriage is a "religious" tradition, and all I hear is how gays hate religion or having it brought up... so why want marriage? Why not the unrelated equivialnt? Because you (as gay persons) define yourself by your sexuality, but that is your problem.. the rest of us define ourselves by our character.. perhaps you should too..Just because something is everywhere, does not make it right or means the rest of us condone it, but to bring it out of your home and define yourself by it... that is sad, and you have no character. To try to make it popular culture is worse, and makes us feel like your trying to shove it down our throats, and that is not fair either. Gays do have rights we do-- we can marry the opposite sex and so can they..days want "extra" rights- you'd better keep out of marriage or you risk loosing Civil Union support.

I don't know which is more troubling the fact that most of the people that commented on this issue are christians who want to force their religion on everyone or the fact that gays shouldn't have rights. From a gay supporters perspective, some of you people have no idea what these individuals go through on a day to day basis. However, I believe that as a gay or lesbian you should be able to fight for this country without discrimination because of your sexual orientation. Some of you should actually get to know them before you make judgements. Because if you read your own bible I believe that it says in Luke 6:37 "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven." I don't think that God meant that to apply to some and not to others. Let them that is without sin cast the first stone. You people are a bunch of hypocrites.

Well it seems that we have drifted away from the question. However, I find several things to comment upon. By definition, hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually have. Actually I do have strong beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities that I support with actions. Perhaps that’s why some people are offended when I explain to them why I have certain beliefs. Why should anyone be offended if one shared their beliefs? I’m not trying to force you to change your beliefs just simply explaining mine. I may hope to reveal to you what I find to be truths. You on the other hand may hope to persuade me to support your beliefs. My friends this is called communication. No one wins when the strategy is attack, attack and attack. If you wish to return to the question, to explain your positions and or to debate the question please do so

Everyone needs to open their eyes to the "SIGNS OF THE TIMES"; they are everywhere! People need to realize that even tho Obama had a white mother (no offense) he also had a Muslim father. His thinking is so far from the Bible now adays it is not even funny. My hat is off to EVERY comment made by Delsie. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA get on your knees before God and beg His mercy upon all before it is too late. Man/Woman is how we were created...KEEP IT THAT WAY! Military or otherwise!

Thats a real interesting comment Don: don't try to force your lifestyle on the rest of us. But it's every other week that I have some christian or Morman or JW coming to my door and shoving there unprovable doctine in my face. Try not being a hyprocrite

God created Adam and Eve, Sent them forth and told them to replenish the earth. It's a shame some individuals think they can change the natural order of man. We can learn a lesson from the animal kingdom. Do what you want, but don't try to force your lifestyle on the rest of us.

DO ANY OF YOU READ YOUR BIBLES AT ALL,OR DO THEY JUST SET SOMEWHERES ON A SHELF AND COLLLECT DUST? DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT GOD SAYS IN HIS WORD ON HOW HE IS GOING TO DESTROY SIN AND SINNERS ALIKE!!! WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK THAT HE SAID IT IN HIS WORD JUST TO BE BLOWING HOT AIR OR SOMETHING.BUT TO ME THIS IS JUST ANOTHER SIGN ON JUST HOW REALLY CLOSE WE ARE AT GODS RETURN. AS IT WAS IN THE DAYS OF NOAH SO SHALL IT BE AT MY RETURN.. OR BETTER YET ANSWER THIS QUETION, WHY DID GOD DESTROY SODOM AND GOMORRAH... ANSWER, GENESIS(thats funny very FIRST book of the Bible)CHAPTER 19 VERSE 5 SAYS THAT BEFORE LOT AND HIS FAMILY COULD LAY DOWN FOR THE NIGHT,THAT THE PEOPLE FROM THAT TOWN CAME BOTH YOUNG AND OLD,AND MORE OR LESS WANTED LOT TO TURN OVER THE MEN (ANGELS THAT HAD VISITED LOT TO WARN ABOUT DESTUCTION)SO THEY COULD KNOW THEM (AND THEY WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT HAVING A CUP OF COFFE). LOT WAS WILLING TO GIVE UP HIS DAUGHTERS TO SATISFY THE EVIL THIS TOWN HAD PLANNED.PEOPLE NEED TO OPEN THEIR EYES

I think it's rather pathetic, that gay and lesbian persons, feel that they don't have any rights. First of all as long as we are a free country in America, I believe that he have a specified contract called the Bill Of Rights, and this extends to all people. Why on earth would you prefer to be treated indifferent than the rest of the country, or rather the rest of us is rediculous. I belive that all Americans no matter what color, or gender, religion, or even preferred sexual partner should be treated any different than anyone else. I do belive that we all have the right to our own sexual preference, but however don't be so indulgent as to ask the rest of the world to step aside, so that you can be treated any differently than the rest of us. Seems to me that to fight for gay rights only means that you as gay people are truely not comfortable living in your own lifestyle that each of you have chosen. This is the real world folks, you can change your world, but don't change mine.
