CBS’ David Letterman is making headlines, and it’s no joke.
This time, he’s at the center of an apparent extortion plot. According to multiple news agencies, a fellow employee, identified as “48 Hours” producer Robert “Joe” Halderman, is charged with trying to blackmail the last night host for $2 million. The situation led Letterman to acknowledge having intimate relationships with at least one female staffer on the October 1st edition of “The Late Show.” People Magazine identified the female staffer as Stephanie Birkitt, the quirky assistant. Many viewers may remember her by her silly costumes and nicknames like “Smitty.”
