No More Robocalls

Ban on robocalls goes into effect

I don't know about you but I'm excited about the ban on robocalls.  That's  those annoying pre-recorded telemarketing calls. Beginning September 1, 2009, Sellers and telemarketers who transmit prerecorded messages to consumers who have not agreed in writing to accept such messages will face penalties of up to $16,000 per call. According to the Federal Trade Commission, this is the last of amendments approved last year by the agency.

Exemptions to the new rule include calls from politicians, public service announcements, "informational, banks, telephone carriers and most charitable organizations.

The FTC says the ban applies only to pre-recorded calls and encourage consumers to sign up for the federal "do not call" registry for additional protections

After September 1, consumers who receive prerecorded telemarketing calls, but have not agreed to get them, should file a complaint with the FTC, either on the www.ftc.gov Web site or by calling (877) FTC-HELP

A thumbs up to the FTC!
