Roll Eagle, War Tide!

I want to clue you in on a little secret I've been keeping from all of you.

No, you didn't read the headline wrong.

You haven't been drinking. Well, maybe you have but I haven't. I typed it sober.

Huddle up for a really, really, really BIG secret.

I'm a fan of BOTH Alabama and Auburn.

Oh yes I can Homer.

Ya see, I'm the son of a North Carolinian.

My allegiances, when it comes to sports fanaticism, lie with the Tar Heel State.

When it comes to the Iron Bowl, I just want to see a great game.

In fact, I have.

#1 Alabama vs #4 Auburn. Chris Davis. "Kick 6"

Yeah I'm somewhere up there.

I was fortunate enough to be sideline.

Sideline to one of THE GREATEST college football games in history.

In 2013 the Alabama Crimson Tide allowed me to spend a week in Miami, Florida.

Notre Dame vs Alabama.

In 2014 the Auburn Tigers allowed me to spend a week in Pasadena, California.

Florida St. vs Auburn.

I've interviewed Nick Saban, A.J. McCarron, C.J. Mosley and Barrett Jones.

I've interviewed Gus Malzahn, Nick Marshall, Chris Davis, and Tre Mason.

I love em all.

They're people just like you and me.

Difference is they put on a jersey to play for a team that half the people in the state of Alabama don't like.

It's not personal. Well for some it is...I'm looking at you Harvey Updyke.

For the majority, it's not personal, it's just sports. And I love that.

The competition, the rivalry, the storylines are why I LOVE what I do.

But see, based on the opportunities I've been afforded in my first job, I'm a fan of both teams.

When they're not playing each other I root for Alabama AND Auburn.

And I can!

Somebody, Somewhere: "You can't do that! Pick a side!"

Me: Pick your nose because I don't boogie like that.

I'm not from around these parts.

Nobody in my family will disown me if I don't Roll Tide or War Eagle.

I don't have that crazy Uncle who repeatedly brings up Auburn or Alabama football stories during family get togethers.

For me growing up it was UNC vs Duke.

I have that crazy Uncle.

He's a Duke fan.

"Crazy" is being used loosely here, by the way.

(At the end of the day we all love our kin regardless of whether or not they should be fit for a straight jacket)

Blood is thicker than water, blah, blah, blah.

Thankfully I have another Uncle who is a Tar Heel fan.

My Dad went to Wake Forest and UNC.

When they played each other in basketball he would pull for Wake and I'd pull for Carolina. We'd be at odds. Loving, sports-rivalry-related odds.

(Love ya Dad!)

Anyway, when Auburn and Alabama play I'm a journalist. Objective. Just the facts.

And that's how it should be.

Pulling for one team doesn't happen. I'm amzazed by great plays.

It doesn't matter which team is doing the hitting, scoring and intercepting.

Good football is good football.

Sometimes people want to

And I'm like, "Look, you're barkin up the wrong tree here."

And when someone calls me a homer for one side or the other it just makes me say
