Good neighbors are a blessing and I have been touched by the neighbor Gods time and time again. When I first moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa I was beyond overwhelmed. I had just left the place I loved more than anything and was missing Oregon with every ounce of my being. Not only that –I had a million boxes from Ikea Furniture and no clue how I would put any of it together.
I had gotten sick from the stress of the whole process and had to anchor a 3 hour morning show in a few days. As I sat amidst the boxes with dishes piled everywhere and not a soul who knew my name-there was a knock at the door.
It was the neighbors from across the street. Don and Linda Blau had brought me cupcakes from the famous local bakery. Don must have seen my overwhelmed look and he instantly said he would be over with his brother to help me put together some of the furniture. “Just have to grab a screwdriver” he said.
That day began a great friendship. Don and Linda were there whenever I needed them. Whether it was for dinner, to fix something broken or to just vent about work-I knew they were always nearby to lend a helping hand.
Here is a picture of Don and Linda when they visited Minneapolis for my little brother's Graduation Party!
And the neighbor Gods touched me again here in Dothan. My lovely neighbor Teresa is a blessing. She’s a bug killer, advice giver, yard sale shopping buddy and much more. She often brings over whatever her family has for dinner for me. It’s so nice to know when you have a problem you can just knock on the next door to get some help. I also feel safe coming home at night knowing she is looking out for me. We even planned a block party for the whole neighborhood so we can all get to know each other.
I suggest knocking on your neighbor’s door. You never know what could happen from it!
