MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Concerned with the safety of law
enforcement officers who have pulled over to the side of the road,
Alabama, Florida and Georgia are teaming up to promote so-called
"Move Over" laws that require motorists give police more space.
The laws require motorists to move over one lane when police,
fire, EMS or tow trucks are on the side of the road.
The National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Fund states that
more than 170 officers have died after being struck by motor
vehicles since 1999.
The campaign will last the month of February and troopers from
all three states will work to educate motorists about the laws.
