ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Athens Fire and Rescue and Athens police are
continuing to investigate two suspicious fires that erupted within
minutes of each other on U.S. 31.
Fire Chief Danny Southard tells the Decatur Daily in a Sunday
story that 911 first received a call about a possible grass fire
near Roy Long Road on U.S. 31 at 8:45 p.m. Friday.
Police Lt. Steve Moore said he was patrolling the area at the
time when he saw flames.
Firefighters responded and found a storage building in flames.
At 8:59 p.m., another 911 call came in about a possible grass fire
a quarter of a mile away and firefighters arrived to find a lean-to
on fire.
That blaze spread to an adjoining garage but the house on the
property was unscathed.
