There are over 300 miles of walking trails across the state of Alabama, and Governor Riley wants Alabamians to get out and enjoy them.

On Wednesday, Riley announced a new initiative called "Passport to Fitness," and it's focused on people getting healthy by walking on the state's walking trails.

It includes a guidebook and interactive website with maps featuring trails through Alabama communities and state parks.

Riley says the initiative is designed to improve the public's physical fitness and promote local tourism.

“If you walk that trail you not only get the fitness benefits but you learn more about civil war, civil rights marches that went on there, says Riley. “If you spend one afternoon in Selma you'll have a different appreciation for the history of this state.”

To learn more about “Passport to Fitness,” you can visit the state's tourism website at www.alabama.travel.
