There's a new social media web site that's taken the technological world by storm. It's called Chat Roulette and it let’s you speak with and see anyone in the world who has a camera on their computer. But there's also a dark side to this latest craze.

Chat roulette is pretty simple.

The site randomly selects two people from all over the world and connects them through a simple video system on your computer.

It's all live and you can hear and see what you're partner is doing.

It may sound harmless, but sometimes the content is disturbing and inappropriate.

“Chat roulette is essentially a video conferencing website. You can log into chat roulette and chat roulette will randomly select another user that's logged into chat roulette and you can start a conversation with them, a video conversation with them,” said social media expert Mike Riddle.

But Chat Roulette has a catch.

“Well you never know who you're going to get on Chat Roulette, you never know who you're going to talk to,” added Riddle.

The new social media site is causing concern over the content that some users choose to share.

Riddle says chat roulette is no place for children.

“I would advise parents to block chat roulette for the safety of their children,”

It's important to remember that this is the internet and a lot of content on the internet is unfiltered and uncensored. One analogy compares chat roulette to slot machine, it’s completely random but instead of winning a jackpot, you're sometimes “rewarded” with some pretty weird stuff.

“It's certainly not safe for work and it would not be safe for children,” said Riddle.

“This new website is dangerous from what I’ve found out about it,” said Sgt. Brian Cherry with the Dothan Police Department.

Sgt. Cherry says this new site opens up your home to thousands of child predators online.

“A child predator will use anything and the internet is pretty much the greatest thing that could have ever been invented for a child predator,” he said.

Officials say for protection, parents need to closely monitor their children as they surf the web.

“Anytime you're letting your children loose on the internet you have to be careful,” said Riddle.

“We have to as parents be very nosy. Whether it's internet, whether it's predators out there, whether it's bullying, you know, just protect your children,” said Officer Thomas Davis with the Dothan Police Department.

Sergeant Cherry says it would be very difficult to track down and arrest anyone doing anything lewd or inappropriate on Chat Roulette because they could be anywhere in the world and it’s hard to track.

Chat Roulette was developed by a Russian teenager and now gets around 1.5 million visitors daily.
