BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Metro Birmingham's construction industry
won't likely recover until 2011.

That's according to Ahmad Ijaz, an economic researcher for the
University of Alabama.

The Birmingham area had 29,200 construction workers in October,
down 3,200 over the past 12 months, making it one of the
hardest-hit sectors in the recession.

Ijaz says some construction companies and subcontractors could
fail as they compete for a declining number of projects.

Geoff Golden of Golden Construction says his company is busy
with projects such as the Cityville Block 121 development on the
Southside, but that across the industry, businesses are hesitant to
pull the trigger on expansion or renovation plans.
