Birmingham teachers lose suit over coaching jobs
The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that a school system can cancel a teacher's extra duties as a coach after the school year has ended.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Seven teachers had sued the Birmingham Board of Education because they were dropped from non-teaching supplemental positions, such as coaching and other sports-related activities, after the school year ended.

Losing the extra duties reduced their paychecks.

They argued that Alabama's teacher tenure law required that they be notified before the school year. And if they weren't notified by the deadline, then they kept the extra duties.

The Supreme Court said the notification requirements of the
tenure law applies to teaching jobs, but not to supplemental
positions filled by teachers.
