MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Country Crossing casino developer Ronnie Gilley says an indicted state senator sought bribes for three other legislators that she said could help swing their votes for
pro-gambling legislation.
Gilley testified Wednesday that Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb
sought money for Sen. Scott Beason, Rep. Benjamin Lewis and Sen.
Kim Benefield in 2009. Gilley said he didn't pay any of them.
Gilley said Smith told him that paying off Benefield's mortgage
would help get her vote. Gilley said Benefield did vote for the
legislation the following year without him doing anything improper
on her behalf.
Beason and Lewis helped the FBI investigate gambling corruption.
Gilley, who pleaded guilty, testified for a fifth day Wednesday.
His casino was in Smith's district.
