It's the Pike County Fur Fest and is designed to bring awareness to the need for a new animal shelter in the county.

Pets play an important role in many of our lives.

This weekend several dogs are hoping one of you will pick them to become a member of your family.

Andy Murphree has adopted several animals. He said, "We've had dogs all my life but I just have a special place in my heart for shelter dogs because they are on their last chance and just looking for a home and people to love them."

Andy has adopted 3 dogs from the shelter and can't imagine life without them.

Andy said, "A dog is one of the few things that I've been around that loves unconditionally. They are always glad to see you and they are never mad at you. If you treat them well they'll treat you mighty well."

"Fur Fest" is a chance for the community to learn about the need for an animal shelter in Pike County and also to raise money to get the groundbreaking underway.

Pike County Animal Shelter volunteer and Founder's Society Chair Donna Schubert said, "The money we raise from this event will go to build a new animal shelter to serve the Troy and greater community."

Pets are welcome at Saturday's event. Just make sure they are on a leash and have their vaccination tags displayed.

The event is Saturday from 10 until 2 at the recreation park in Troy.

Admission is 3 dollars per person or 5 dollars per car.

They'll be barbeque, bands and games for dogs of all sizes.
