Young Girl Likely Cured of H.I.V.

A two-year girl in Mississippi is the first child to be functionally cured of H-I-V researchers say.

This finding was announced Sunday at the 2013 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.

A functional cure is when the presence of the virus is so small clinical tests cannot detect it in the blood.

Within thirty hours of her birth, the baby was given three anti-viral drugs.

Researchers say they believe this early intervention was the key.

Even after her mother stopped giving the toddler treatment for eight to 10 months ... blood tests did not detect the presence of the virus.

The child was born to an H-I-V positive mother who received no pre-natal care and was not diagnosed as H-I-V positive until just before delivery.
