State Employees Will Pay More Health Insurance in 2014

Alabama State employers will pay more for health insurance next year.

The move, made by the state employee’s insurance board, is being implemented to make up a projected $36 million deficit. Some premiums have been raised and co-pays for urgent care are going up as well as costs for emergency room visits and outpatient surgeries.

The board also allocated about $11 million from reserves. The changes go into effect on Jan. 1.

Currently, active state employees pay $15 a month for a single coverage and $250 for family coverage.
