The Food and Drug Administration is debating whether to approve the first drug to prevent HIV.
The F-D-A already approved the drug Truvada in 2004 to treat people already infected with the virus.
However experts say they should expand the drug to healthy humans based on results of a study.
It involved gay men and heterosexual couples at high risk of becoming infected with HIV.
Those trials showed Truvada cut the risk of new infection by at least 44-percent in healthy gay and bisexual men and by 73-percent in heterosexual couples in which one partner had HIV but the other did not.
