One of the Worst Hospitals in the U.S. Could be Closer Than You Think

This is a list no hospital wants to land on, and according to the hospital the reason they are on the list is one that should also be exposed.

Log onto health.com and scroll down the list of the 25 worst hospitals in America and Wiregrass Medical Center is number one, but if you take a closer look, you'll see the list is in alphabetical order by state.

C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner took me through the entire list of hospitals and grades.

He explained not only why the Wiregrass Medical Center is on the list, but why it got an F.

"The process of giving a patient antibiotics before surgery, see that kind of stuff, what if we gave it at the end of surgery you know the thing is do you get an infection,” says C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner.

According to Leapfrog hospitals are graded on infection rates, medical errors, injuries, and medication misfires.

Faulkner says Leapfrog snuck in the back door to gain information, which resulted in the hospital being placed on the list.

"So leapfrog, extrapolates information. from Medicare information, Blue Cross information, to Medicaid information," says C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner.

"Unfortunately not everyone fits into Leapfrog's categories; most Alabama hospitals have chosen not to participate, in Leapfrog because we feel their categories, are mature enough to participate in," says C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner.

The bottom line, according to the hospital...

"I would put our infection control and safety results up against anybody, we do a job here, we just don't met their criteria," says C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner.

The hospital is offered the option to have the failing grade reversed, but not without a few dollars and cents.

"And then they say if you don't like your score, you can send us twenty five bucks, and we will modify your score," says C.E.O. of the Wiregrass Medical Center Charles Faulkner.
