They are troubling statistics.
Studies show every fourteen minutes someone dies by suicide, and nearly one million people make a suicide attempt a year.
Today marks worldwide suicide prevention day.
The suicide prevention and recovery services in Dothan, wants to assist in the awareness and prevention of suicide.
Katrice Nolan was at the open house of the service center and has more.
Rose Blakey Philips knows first hand what it is like to lose a loved one to suicide.
Her husband died 16 years ago.
"My husband died by suicide in 1996," says Philips, Director of Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services.
And she is still trying to cope with the loss.
So along busy Main Street is this brick front, a place to renew.
Inside is Philips' suicide and prevention services that she runs along with her daughters.
It’s a safe haven for families and survivors who have dealt with suicide.
"One of our goals is to create awareness in our community of the seriousness of this problem, and that it is often preventable," says Philips, Director of Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services.
One thing that is stressed here at the suicide prevention services is that before someone makes that type of decision that they pick up the phone to get help.
“They can call our office which is 334-792-9814. We recommend the national hotline and they refer back to us," says Philips, Director of Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services.
Philips' daughter Jennifer Pettis, says after experiencing the pain of losing a loved one by suicide, they knew something had to be done to help others.
"People tend to open up to other people when they know it's something they are going through...so over the years so many people have come to us with their stories," says Jennifer Pettis of the Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services.
And each story helps heal the wound that is left behind after family deals with death by suicide.
But what they want shared more is giving people hope that prevention is possible.
"We wanted to do what we could to help other people not have to live through what we had to live through," says Jennifer Pettis of the Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services.
