UNDATED (AP) - One family health expert says a new abortion
study is the first to show how "safe and effective" the so-called
abortion pill is.
The study by Planned Parenthood analyzed medical abortions
carried out at its centers over a two-and-a-half-year period.
That's about 228,000 cases. It found that the abortion pill was
about 98.5-percent effective. And it also found that changes in how
it was given dramatically reduced the risk of a dangerous
infection.
The two-pill procedure is carried out during the first nine
weeks of a pregnancy. It's currently used in about a-quarter of
early abortions. And Dr. Beverly Winikoff of Columbia University
says the study's results will likely encourage more women to choose
the pill as an alternative to the surgical procedure.
The results are being published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
