Mom's Depression & Baby Health

Babies born to depressed mothers are at a greater risk of developing sleep problems.

A new study out of the University of Michigan finds higher rates of sleep disorders are reported in infants of depressed mothers.
Researchers discovered that these babies need more time to fall asleep, sleep for shorter periods of time, and take shorter daytime naps.
Scientists say levels of the stress hormone in depressed pregnant women is linked to the sleep disorders in newborns.
Sleep problems affect about twenty to thirty percent of infants.
The study appears in the journal "Sleep."
