Health experts say a new strain of swine influenza may spread quickly. The flu has already killed dozens in Mexico and has spread to several U-S states.
Newspaper headlines in Mexico City capture the fear and concern about a deadly outbreak of swine flu.
Public events in the city are suspended and schools are closed until further notice....the wearing of surgical masks is becoming common.
The head of the World Health Organization says the new strain has pandemic potential as it's killed mostly healthy young adults and the agency had declared a public health emergency of international concern.
Margaret Chan with the World Health Organization said, "I think that at this point in time, it is very important that all regions of the World Health Organization work with our countries to heighten surveillance."
The virus has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than a thousand in Mexico.
Ten people in Texas , California and Kansas have also been diagnosed and New York city Health Officials have identified a potential outbreak at a Queens High School after testing samples taken from nine students.
New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas R. Frieden said, “That Laboratory has identified those specimens, 8 out of 9 of those specimens as probable human swine influenza.”
All the cases in the U.S. have been mild, but the Centers for Disease Control expects there will be more infections.
So far, there have been no travel restrictions between the US and Mexico and many passengers coming to Los Angeles from Mexico City are aware but unfazed.
Washing your hands is the easiest way to combat the flu.
Two flu drugs are also proving effective to treat the new strain but they must be taken within the first few days of infection.
