Wine and Health

The study looked at more than 950 people, and found men and women who drink a glass of wine a day are 56 percent less likely to develop Barrett’s esophagus -- a precursor to esophagus cancer.

About five percent of the population is affected by Barrett’s esophagus.

It occurs when heartburn or acid reflux permanently damages the esophagus' lining.

The study doesn't show why wine may lower the risk, but researchers think its antioxidants may help neutralize Barrett’s damage.

The study appears in the March issue of the journal "Gastroenterology."
