The government has approved a new weapon for doctors' arsenals against bacteria.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved an antibiotic called Tygacil. It's used to treat complicated abdominal and skin infections in adults.
An FDA doctor says the drug is the first in a new class of antibiotics derived from the older tetracycline family.
Experts say new antibiotics are urgently needed to fight bacteria that are evolving resistance to other drugs.
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals says studies found its drug is comparable to some two-drug combinations used now.
