Private companies are funding two-thirds of the medical research conducted at the nation's medical schools -- and that's increased their influence on the outcome.
A survey of 107 of the nation's 122 medical schools found that more than half allow their benefactors to draft professional articles. A quarter of the schools would allow drug and medical device manufacturers to supply research results.
While the schools are not urged to suppress negative findings, some researchers say such corporate influence is unreasonable.
Professional organizations and some members of Congress are calling for more public disclosure of privately funded research.
The study is published in Thursday's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
