Trimming the tree and decorating your home are some of the most enjoyable traditions of the holiday season, but there are many people who don't have the time to get tangled up in lights or fuss with a ladder.
In this Angie's List report, we have tips on hiring a professional to hang your holiday decorations.
There's the sorting, the tangling, and the climbing. Those are just a few hassles that come with holiday decorating. If you burn out before your first strand of Christmas lights, maybe you should think of hiring a professional decorator.
"The holidays can be very stressful as it is so bringing in someone who can help you hang holiday lights, that checks one more thing off your to-do list. Also, they are going to have the right equipment and be able to do it a lot more efficiently than you'll be able to do it yourself,” Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks said.
So how do you find the right person to deck your halls?
"You’re going to want to find a company that has done holiday decorations before. A lot of handymen, for example, or landscapers, might have built it into a business. Be sure they have the right equipment and that they are insured. You want to make sure their employees have workers comp insurance so if someone gets hurt on your property it doesn't go against your homeowner's insurance,” Hicks said.
Also, figure out how the decorator is going to charge. Do you have to buy their decorations or will they hang up items you've already purchased? It's also a good idea to be home when the decorators begin in case they have questions.
"Generally what I need from the homeowner is access to the power sources, and I need to know what else is on these power sources so I’m aware of my electrical limitations, and I need access sometimes to the house so I can determine that to see what else might be on the outlets or what my limitations are,” landscaper Paul Evan said.
Finally, make sure the people you hire will come out and take down the decorations a few weeks after the holidays. Leaving the decorations up too long could turn your neighbors into scrooge.
If this is your first time hanging decorations in a housing development, make sure the homeowner's association doesn't have any limitations on which decorations can go up.
