For the seventh consecutive year, home warranty companies topped the most complained about categories list on Angie's List.

2011 might be a year home warranty companies wish they could repair.
"Home warranty companies have topped the list again for our most complained about category with 46 percent of the reviews being either D's or F's. What we found in this process is that consumers are not clear about what a home warranty covers, and we are seeing complaints about the quality of contractors the home warranty company sends out to do the repairs,” Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks said.
It's not the only industry to appear on that list again. Another repeat offender: Internet service providers. That industry took second place on the most complained about list. Third place goes to a first timer: banks or credit unions.
If you haven't had a bad experience with a home warranty company just yet, Angie said there are ways to stay on the right track.
"The key from the consumer's perspective is to understand the home warranty. Many times people get them as a gift so be sure to invest the time and understand the contract before the need develops. When you do have a need and you call the warranty company for repair, ask for two or three names of companies that they would use for the repair and do the research yourself for those companies,” Hicks said.
Some companies didn't get nearly as many bad reviews. The top three least complained about categories for 2011 on Angie's List were piano tuners, mailbox repair groups, and hauling services. Maybe they could give some of their secrets to home-warranty companies.
"We really encourage companies in this category to think about and work on fixing these problems. The great thing is they have this feedback and it's something they can do something about. First, make sure they are being clear with their consumers about what the warranty covers. Additionally, they need to do extra screening on the contractors that they are having done the repairs so they make sure that the work done is done to the consumer's expectation,” Hicks said.
Angie's List makes these lists based on consumer surveys. They grade the companies on overall experience, price, quality, responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism.
