Many grocery stores are helping the environment by going green.
Re-usable shopping bags are offered at many stores throughout the city.
Many people are unaware of the need to regularly wash their reusable grocery bags.
Health officials say the bags could contain dangerous forms of bacteria which can cause illness.
In addition to washing the grocery bags, it’s important to keep meats separate from vegetables to avoid cross contamination.
Environmental Supervisor, Doug Turnbull says, "Hospitals don't hear about most cases. [People] have what they think is a stomach virus, but it’s much more serious. They're more common than you would ever imagine."
Turnbull says, reusable bags should not be stored in the trunks of cars because high temperatures promote bacteria growth.
